Lawyers - Five Reasons Why Liyumba Should Walk

Lawyers defending former senior Bank of Tanzania official Amatus Liyumba yesterday advanced at least five reasons why abuse of office charges against him should be dismissed. The lawyers filed a 16-page no-case-to-answer submission at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court, arguing that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie (clear) case against Mr Liyumba, who is the former BoT director of administration and personnel.
They argued that their client could not be found liable even if he offered no explanation on allegations levelled against him.

The lawyers cite at least five points why the court should acquit their client without necessarily having to defend himself.
Mr Liyumba has denied two counts of abuse of office and causing the government a Sh221 billion loss, but has been languishing in remand prison since January 2009. He was granted bail, but has failed to raise Sh110 billion to secure his release.
